john,

i am by far no expert, but i think i can help getting O up and running for you. I suspect that you have the executable file (WIN_ONO.EXE) in the directory /O/bin, correct? and your DATA directory is under /O/bin also, correct?

at this point, you have 2 options (from my experience).

OPtion 1- the most simple remedy is to move your WIN_ONO.EXE file into your /O/bin/DATA directory and start O from there. By doing this, all the files you will need, such as menu.odb, etc will be in the same directory and easily found, and all you have to do is keep hitting enter to load the files and open O.

Option 2- this is a bit more tedious, but you can leave WIN_ONO.EXE in /O/bin/, and you will have to give explicit locations for the files, such as menu.odb, which would be [DATA/menu.odb] instead of just [menu.odb].

I would choose Option 1, which is much more simple. then you can create shortcuts to WIN_ONO.EXE to your desktop for easy loading. Again, remember, everything you input into O, such as pdb files, maps, etc, must be loaded relative to where the WIN_ONO.EXE file is located. for example, i usually add project directories to /O/bin/, such as /O/bin/protein1 and /O/bin/protein2, etc. As an example, if i want to load a pdb file (and WIN_ONO.EXE is in /DATA), then i would need to use the command...

s-a-i ../protein1/protein1.pdb or
s-a-i ../protein2/protein2.pdb

...again, relative to WIN_ONO.EXE. Hope some of this helps and if you still have trouble, let me know. i can send you some screenshots that will surely clear things up. best of luck!

Cheers,
nick

Subject: [o-info] O for Windows XP

I have O installed on my linux box and it's working just great. When
I'm not in the office, I use VNC to view my desktop and operate O, but
it's jerky and that greatly hinders me. Getting to the point, I'd like
to install O on my Windows XP laptop but it doesn't seem to working.
I've downloaded the executable and placed it in a directory called "bin"
under a directory called "O". I've also downloaded the data directory
as well and updated the menu.odb file with that provided in the
directory where I found the executable. However, when prompted to enter
the menu.odb file (or just press return), the program quits. Anything
you could provide would be most helpful. In addition, I'm not sure I
won't still have the jerkiness issue as my laptop does not have a great
graphics card. Any suggestions how to setup the display to minimize
this? Thanks!
