We would like to announce the availability of a new large crystallization database
of biological macromolecules (BDP), accessible at

                          http://www.xtalbase.net

All data were extracted from the RCSB Protein Data Bank. The data are based on
work by Tom Peat et al. (T. S. Peat, J. A. Christopher and J. Newman (2005).
Tapping the Protein Data Bank for crystallization information. Acta Cryst. D61,
1662-1669). The BDP is integrated in the crystallization management system
XtalBase (W. Meining (2006). XtalBase - a comprehensive data management system for
macromolecular crystallography. J. Appl. Cryst., 39, 759-766).

The database currently comprises 11760 conditions, of which 8270 are unique
component formulations. All data are freely browseable and searchable. The
database comprises information about the reservoir components including
concentrations and pH's and references to the corresponding PDB entries and some
statistical evaluation of the frequency of component combinations.

Access to this database is free for academic users, industrial users are asked to
pay a subscription fee on an annual basis. Subscriptions are paid per user group.

XtalBase is a free data management system for crystallization and crystallographic
data written in the PHP scripting language. An installation package can be
downloaded from the XtalBase website.
