Post-doctoral Position in Protein Crystallography at the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Physiology, Department of Physical Biochemistry, Dortmund (Germany). A post-doctoral position is available immediately for an investigator to use single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, including synchrotron radiation, to investigate the structure of the membrane protein complex PS II from the cyanobacteria Synechococcus elongatus. The purification and crystallization of the functional PS II is established (Kuhl et al. (2000) J. Biol. Chem. 275, 20652-20659). The current diffraction resolution is around 3.8 A. Our focus is the improvement of diffraction and the analysis of structure-function relation- ships with substrate analogues, inhibitors and deletion mutants. This project is a tight collaboration with the group of Prof. Matthias Rögner from the Ruhr- University in Bochum. The crystallographic labs at the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Physiology are well equipped with two Hi-Star and two Mar345 area detectors and three Oxford-Cryostream devices. In addition, the laboratory will make use of synchrotron beamtime at the ESRF (Grenoble) and DESY/Hasylab (Hamburg). There are overall four crystallographic research groups in the institute and it provides a good and international environment for research in macromolecular structure. A recent PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, or a closely related field is required. Knowledge of crystallographic techniques including data processing, phase determination and improvement, model building, and protein structure refinement is essential. Salary will be according to the german standard wage BAT IIa. The initial appointment will be for two years, with a possible extension for another year. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. If you are interested, please send a cover letter and your detailed resume curriculum vitae including names of two referees to the address below. Axel J.
