I have the same experience with symop. The s.g. info is required in the header of 
the pdb file for O to understand it ( I have a P3121 case.), if not, O screwed up
the symmetry operation. Input the symop using sym_set didn't work if there is no
such header info. If you repeat sym_set, it will show P1 as the s.p. again.
It would be nice if it can be fixed.
